First beating heart atrial septal defect (ASD) closure with fast track anaesthesia was done by the cardithoracic vascular surgery (CTVS) team of Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Pradyumna Bal Memorial Hospital.
This for the first time in Odisha that Redo Mitral Valve Replacement was conducted in KIMS. A 13-year-old female child was operated by the CTVS team of KIMS for ASD by beating heart surgery and fast track anaesthesia, which is done for the first time in Odisha.
The large defect was repaired by pericardial patch using the beating heart outflow occlusion technique. The patient was put on the fast track anaesthesia protocol by which she was extubated on operation table itself without requiring post-operative mechanical ventilation.
A team comprising of CTVS surgeons Dr Bana Bihari Mishra and Dr Nimai charan Behera; cardiac anaesthetists Dr Ashok Kumar Badamali and Dr Jyoti Ranjan Parida; and perfusionists Saumyakant Satpathy and Subishna Bal conducted this unique case at KIMS.
