Chennai: Tamil Nadu– based SRM University would be launching a new herbal drug for treatment of Type-2 diabetes in six months time for which it had received the patent from the US.

The varsity would be commercialising the US-patented drug for which a company christened ‘SRM Pharma Limited‘ was formed. The herbal drug would be manufactured in India, probably at a unit in North India, SRM University Vice-Chancellor M Ponnavaikko said.

The US Patent office granted the patent in December 2012 for an herbal formulation for prevention and management of Type-2 Diabetes and other vascular complications associated with it.
A six-member research team led by Govind Prasad Dubey had invented the drug for which the US had granted the patent.
Type-II diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that is primarily characterised by insulin resistance, relative insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia,’ the background note on the herbal drug said.
The invention of the herbal drug comes at a time when there was alarming increase in the case of Type-2 diabetes in developed nations.
SRM University would soon file patent applications for two more herbal drugs for menopause, cardiovascular and obesity problems, Ponnavaikko said.
