Researchers at the University of Maryland have developed a new method to help assess the performance of health information exchange systems. According to researchers at the University of Maryland’s Center for Health Information and Decision Systems, the uation tool measures the effectiveness of any regional health information organisation in the nation. The framework was developed using information from: The DC RHIO, the primary health information exchange in Washington, D.C.; An examination of health information exchange initiatives around the country; and A review of published best practices The framework assesses health information exchanges on five key performance measures: Sustainability of the business model; Decision-making processes and organizational structure; Engagement with the community; Technology use; and Level of confidence in the system According to researchers, only 18 of approximately 200 health information exchange initiatives nationwide have operating funds that exceed expenses.
