Zoll Medical Corporation has successfully completed a trial uating Auto Pulse, its non-invasive cardiac life-support pump. This was the first large-scale randomised resuscitation trial to come to a successful conclusion with a statistically significant result. The trial’s data safety monitoring board closed enrolment when an analysis of the results revealed that Auto Pulse was equivalent to manual chest compressions. The trial compared the rates of survival to hospital discharge in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest of patients treated with the load-distributing band device compared to those receiving manual CPR. The trial, initiated in 2007, enrolled approximately 4,000 patients and was governed by an independent data safety monitoring board.
