Scientists at SINTEF ICT have developed a sensor belt that monitors chronically ill patients and communicates the results via a mobile phone. The belt, which can be easily fitted, is designed to measure heart-rate, temperature and activity. A clinical trial of the belt is planned with a research partner in the US, in which six patients with chronic heart disease will participate in a 30-day programme in their own home. The data will be transmitted to a home-care centre, while the patients will additionally measure their weight and blood pressure and report any subjective symptoms. The patients will also receive feedback to help them to cope with their situation and encourage them to be more active.
