ICD-10 compliant encoder training tool will be showcased by QuadraMed Corporation, the Quantim Coding Simulator, at the Virtual Laboratory of The American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA) Assembly on Education Symposium, taking place July 27- 29, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nev. This is a knowledge-based encoder training tool which is to help enable the coders and students to gain proficiency in using ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS code sets well ahead of the mandated implementation date of October 1, 2013. Significantly, ‘GEMS1 mapping tool’ is embedded in the training tool along with other features for easy identification of crosswalks between ICD-10 codes and ICD-9 codes.

The transition from 13,000 ICD-9-CM codes to approximately 68,000 ICD-10-CM codes, and 3,800 procedure codes to 73,000 ICD-10-PCS codes presents a significant challenge to healthcare organizations due to the current shortage of coders and the extensive training needs for coding staff. However, with Quantim Coding Simulator, students and professional coders can quickly and easily learn the new mandated coding structure and guidelines using a ‘real world’ application in a test environment that closely simulates the live experience of managing the greatly expanded code sets of ICD-10.
