Wireless broadband market is estimated to touch INR 52,000 crore with an estimated subscriber base of 19 million by 2012, WiMax Forum has forecast. The projected market includes broadband wireless products as well as services, said WiMax Forum, said the advocacy group which promotes broadband connectivity through wireless mode, in a statement. The forum makes this projection keeping in mind the wireless technology’s performance capabilities, early availability, cost advantages, government support and the upcoming auctions relating to the 2.3/2.5 GHz frequency bands, it added. The forum also forecasts that by 2012 the Indian market would support 27.5 million WiMax users representing about 20 per cent of the global WiMax user base. Ronald Resnick, President and Chairman of the forum who is in India at present, said the potential of the wireless technology is huge in the country as there are only 4.5 million broadband users at present. He added that, with the recent regulatory decisions, India joins other major developed nations such as the US, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Russia in freeing up prime spectrum for mobile WiMax deployments, which would proliferate the use of this technology. The forum also predicts that major rollouts of WiMax technology in India will have a tremendous positive effect on the nations economy as it will greatly increase economic productivity by laying the groundwork for important initiatives, such as distance learning, telemedicine and e-government.
