Omron Healthcare, the medical device arm of Japan’s Omron Corporation, has begun full-scale production of blood pressure monitors at its first manufacturing plant in India, located at Origins by Mahindra in Puduvoyal, Gummidipoondi, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The factory was formally opened on 30 October 2026 and is run by its subsidiary, Omron Healthcare Manufacturing India Pvt. Ltd.

What the Omron Chennai plant will make
The 24,000-square-metre site runs five production lines, all dedicated at launch to upper-arm blood pressure monitors for Indian buyers. The company’s announcement lists three model families: the entry-level HEM-7090 series for first-time users, the HEM-7181 series and the HEM-7183T series, which adds a Trend Indicator that flags rising readings and Bluetooth pairing with the OMRON Connect health app.
- Operator: Omron Healthcare Manufacturing India Pvt. Ltd., incorporated in July 2022
- Location: Origins by Mahindra industrial estate, Puduvoyal, Tiruvallur district, near Chennai
- Mass production: started in October 2026; about 120 employees as of November 2026
- Initial capacity: around 3 lakh monitors a year, The Hindu reported
- Target: tenfold capacity by 2028, or roughly 3 million units a year
Quality systems transferred from Japan and Vietnam
Omron said the plant uses production technology and quality-control practices developed at its Matsusaka factory in Japan and its facilities in Vietnam and China, so that devices made in Chennai match the measurement accuracy of monitors it ships to other markets. The company also pointed to local component sourcing, skills development and job creation as its contribution to the Make in India programme. The plant was built within about three years of Omron signing a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government in 2023.

Reducing reliance on a single production base
The Chennai unit is as much a supply-chain decision as a market one. Speaking to Reuters ahead of the opening, Omron Healthcare President and CEO Ayumu Okada said the company relied too heavily on its Vietnam factory and wanted to spread production risk across countries. She said India could become one of the company’s biggest manufacturing bases, and that the plant could reach about 3.5 million units a year if it runs three shifts, CNBC-TV18 reported. Omron also plans to export monitors from Chennai to Europe and to add nebuliser production for respiratory conditions such as asthma, though no timeline has been given. Local production will not lead to lower retail prices for now, Okada said.
A large and underserved home-monitoring market
Omron estimates that about 300 million people in India live with hypertension, yet fewer than 5% of households regularly use a home blood pressure monitor. The company, which has operated in India since 2010 and held about 40% of the country’s blood pressure monitor market in 2025 according to its own data, wants home monitor penetration to roughly double to 10% by 2030. It has previously worked with the Indian Society of Hypertension on India’s first home blood pressure monitoring guidelines, and has partnered with AliveCor on AI-enabled home heart monitoring devices in India.
What it means for India’s medtech manufacturing
India still imports a large share of its medical devices, and a global brand moving mass production of a high-volume home-care device into the country adds weight to the push for domestic medtech capacity. It also fits a wider shift from assembly towards innovation-led medtech manufacturing. Omron’s plan to serve Europe from Chennai comes as the India–EU free trade agreement opens that market wider to India-made pharma and medtech products. Wider use of connected monitors could also support remote patient monitoring for chronic conditions such as hypertension.
