India has taken another significant step towards advancing regenerative medicine and translational research with the inauguration of a Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) Cellular Therapy Facility at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi.

The state-of-the-art facility was inaugurated by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh and is designed to manufacture high-quality cellular products under internationally accepted cGMP standards, supporting advanced research and future clinical applications. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s capabilities in cell-based therapies, precision medicine, and biomedical innovation.

During the event, ILBS also proposed establishing a National Centre for Liver and Metabolic Diseases to integrate clinical care, research, education, innovation, and public health under one platform. The proposal aims to accelerate scientific collaboration and improve the management of liver and metabolic disorders in the country.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the growing burden of metabolic diseases, including obesity and fatty liver disease, stressing the importance of early prevention and research-driven healthcare solutions. Experts noted that cellular therapies have the potential to transform the treatment of liver diseases, metabolic disorders, and several chronic illnesses through regenerative medicine.

The event also commemorated the anniversary of the Liver and Metabolic Disease Network (InFLiMeN), bringing together policymakers, clinicians, scientists, and international collaborators. Representatives from 17 scientific groups across India reaffirmed their commitment to collaborative research, reinforcing the country’s growing focus on innovation-led healthcare and positioning India as an emerging global hub for advanced biomedical research.
