The National Medical Commission (NMC) has called upon medical colleges and institutions across India to actively promote patent filing for healthcare innovations through the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative. The advisory aims to strengthen the country’s biomedical innovation ecosystem by helping researchers convert promising discoveries into practical healthcare technologies and products.

Under the government-backed programme, faculty members, clinicians, researchers, and students are encouraged to seek patent protection for their innovations with comprehensive support from ICMR. The initiative provides fully funded assistance for patent filing, intellectual property management, and technology transfer, enabling innovators to protect their research while accelerating its path to commercialisation and public use.

The NMC has advised medical colleges to widely disseminate information about the Patent Mitra programme and motivate eligible innovators to utilise the platform. Institutions have also been encouraged to identify research with strong commercial potential and facilitate its translation into market-ready healthcare solutions. The Commission believes that increased participation from academic institutions will foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship within India’s medical education system.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of strengthening medical research, indigenous healthcare technologies, and intellectual property creation. By bridging the gap between scientific research and industry, the programme is expected to support the development of innovative medical devices, diagnostics, digital health solutions, and therapeutic technologies while reducing dependence on imported healthcare products.

Experts believe that stronger patent awareness among medical institutions will not only safeguard original research but also create opportunities for collaboration between academia, industry, and startups. The NMC’s advisory marks another step towards positioning India as a global hub for healthcare innovation, ensuring that groundbreaking medical research translates into accessible and impactful solutions for patients worldwide.
