In a landmark effort to consolidate and promote excellence across India’s top healthcare institutions, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare hosted the first edition of the “Conclave on Best Practices” at AIIMS Nagpur on June 13–14, 2025. The event, held in a hybrid format, brought together leading administrators, faculty, and policymakers from newly established AIIMS institutions to share exemplary models in healthcare delivery, governance, research, and education.

Virtually inaugurating the two-day conclave, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, lauded the role of AIIMS institutions in enhancing both the quality and accessibility of public healthcare in India. “Each AIIMS, designated as an Institute of National Importance, is a pillar of excellence that integrates advanced clinical services, cutting-edge medical education, and regionally relevant research,” he said.

The event witnessed participation from AIIMS campuses across the country, including AIIMS Bhopal, Jammu, Bilaspur, Jodhpur, Nagpur, Deoghar, Patna, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, and Raipur. Stakeholders from the Ministry of Defence, the PMSSY (Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana) division, and other senior officials also contributed to the knowledge-sharing sessions.

Spotlight on Innovation and Collaboration

The conclave focused on three strategic pillars: Teaching-learning and research, hospital services, and governance and patient convenience. In his address, Shri Nadda acknowledged how the new AIIMS campuses are shaping the future of Indian healthcare through innovation, infrastructure, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

He emphasised that the AIIMS model demonstrates that “efficiency and compassion can coexist” in public health institutions. With initiatives like Jan Aushadhi Kendras, digital OPD registration, structured mentorship programs, e-governance tools, and patient helpdesks, these institutions are setting benchmarks in patient-centric service delivery.

AIIMS as Catalysts of Scientific Progress

Highlighting the scientific impact of these institutions, the Minister pointed to the AIIMS network’s growing contributions to ethical clinical trials, translational research, and locally relevant healthcare studies. “By fostering collaboration across disciplines and regions, AIIMS campuses are not just reducing disparities, they are accelerating India’s healthcare progress,” he added.

In the realm of medical education, the adoption of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME), investments in simulation-based learning, and the development of digital learning platforms have helped build a more future-ready generation of healthcare professionals.

A Shared Vision for Equitable Care

Speaking at the event, Union Health Secretary Ms. Punya Salila Srivastava stressed the importance of institutional leadership and collaboration, stating that “excellence in medical education and universal healthcare are central to the Government’s vision for India.” She encouraged AIIMS leaders to embrace and replicate proven best practices for broader national impact.

Ankita Mishra Bundela, Joint Secretary (PMSSY), along with Dr. Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director, AIIMS Nagpur, and senior representatives from the Ministry of Defence and various AIIMS institutes, also attended and contributed to the deliberations.

The Conclave marked a significant milestone in India’s ongoing mission to deliver equitable, high-quality, and affordable healthcare, reaffirming the government’s long-term commitment to strengthening public health infrastructure through centres of excellence like AIIMS.
