
Meghalaya has been recognized as one of the leading states in India’s “100-Day TB Elimination Campaign,” demonstrating its dedication to eradicating tuberculosis (TB) through strategic interventions and community-driven healthcare initiatives. The announcement was made during the National World TB Day observance held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where Shri. J.P. Nadda, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, conferred the prestigious award on the state.
The Government of Meghalaya’s relentless efforts in combating TB have been pivotal in securing this national recognition. Receiving the award on behalf of the state, Shri. Ramkumar S, IAS, Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, cum Mission Director, National Health Mission, Meghalaya, expressed gratitude to the Government of India and emphasized the state’s continued commitment towards TB elimination.

“This award is a testament to the collective efforts of our healthcare workers, community volunteers, and policymakers who have tirelessly worked towards a TB-free Meghalaya. We remain committed to strengthening our healthcare initiatives and ensuring accessible treatment for all,” said Shri. Advancing TB Elimination Efforts in Meghalaya
The recognition comes as a result of Meghalaya’s proactive measures under the “100-Day TB Elimination Campaign,” which was launched on December 7, 2024, as part of India’s National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP). The state implemented an aggressive strategy to identify, diagnose, and treat TB cases with an emphasis on high-risk populations.

Key interventions included:
- Active case finding among vulnerable groups using AI-enabled digital mobile X-ray units and Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) diagnostic tools.
- Strengthening healthcare infrastructure to improve early detection and treatment adherence.
- Engaging traditional healers to foster early diagnosis and increase awareness about TB care.
- Community outreach programs to mobilize participation and reduce stigma surrounding TB treatment.
As a result of these targeted initiatives, 625 villages in Meghalaya were declared TB-free in 2024, a significant milestone in the state’s fight against tuberculosis.

Launch of the Meghalaya Comprehensive TB Care Initiative
Alongside the national campaign, Meghalaya introduced the Meghalaya Comprehensive TB Care initiative, aimed at providing holistic support to TB patients. Under this initiative:
- Free transportation, additional diagnostic tests, and enhanced nutritional support are offered to TB patients.
- The state government has adopted more than 4,500 TB patients under the initiative, making Meghalaya the first state to become a “Universal Ni-Kshay Mitra.”
- TB patients and their families receive nutritional kits worth ₹2,000 per month, reinforcing Meghalaya’s commitment to addressing not just the medical but also the socio-economic aspects of TB treatment.
State Leadership Acknowledges the Efforts
The World TB Day 2025 observance in Meghalaya was held at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong, with Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Lyngdoh emphasized the importance of ensuring all notified TB patients receive government assistance and advocated for active collaboration with traditional healers for early TB detection.
