When we say, kidney problem it generally means your kidneys can’t remove waste products from your body like they should. Almost 30 million people are estimated to have kidney problems and it’s on the rise. In most of the cases, kidney disease is related to bad lifestyle and need of the hour is improve lifestyle by changing dietary habits and incorporating workout in the routine.

Let’s have a look on few dietary and workout tips for people suffering from kidney problems.

Say no to alcohol

Any amount of alcohol consumption can compromise kidney function, particularly in conjunction with established liver disease. Investigators have observed alcohol-related changes in the structure and function of the kidneys and impairment in their ability to regulate the volume and composition of fluid and electrolytes in the body.

Chronic alcoholic patients may experience low blood concentration of key electrolytes as well as potentially severe alterations in the body’s acid-base balance. In addition, alcohol can disrupt the hormonal control mechanisms that govern kidney function.

People with kidney problems should be dissuaded to remove alcohol from their diet plan.

Optimum water intake

There are some studies that suggest that increased water intake can help in proper functioning of kidney. Less water intake is also a major cause of kidney problem. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) found to be less among people drinking less water than average. A section of experts believe that cutting down sodium can help to improve kidney functioning. Overall, intake of water is more beneficial than any other ways.

 More fiber intake

Evidence suggests that dietary fiber(green leafy vegetables, oats, fruits like- banana) benefits patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) as it decreases Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR). The fiber intake can help in maintaining cognitive health.

Protein Intake

It is often believed that high protein intake puts negative effect on kidney disease. But it doesn’t hold true for a healthy individual who does not have pre-existing kidney problem.

People who have existing kidney problems, high-protein intake may lead to increased intraglomerular pressure and glomerular hyper filtration. This might cause damage to glomerular structure and might aggregate kidney disease. Consumption of 0.8gm/per kg bodyweight protein is found to be safe for people suffering for chronic kidney disease.

Losing weight

Obesity has become a worldwide epidemic, and its prevalence has been projected to grow by 40% in the next decade. Obesity makes people vulnerable to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). A high body mass index is one of the strongest risk factors for CKD.

Workout recommendation

As stated above obesity is one of the major reasons for having kidney problems. It is necessary for that person to lose weight and workout is even more crucial.

According to some studies, resistance training can help people with kidney problem as it increases muscular strength/ muscular endurance and improves body composition. Even e-GFR is found to be more among those patients who do resistance training.

Even the combination of aerobic activity and resistance training can be helpful in this scenario.
