Suresh Kumar

Health Secretary Suresh Kumar has underlined that despite the remarkable progress of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, the role of doctors remains irreplaceable. He said technology can significantly strengthen healthcare delivery, but it cannot replicate the empathy, compassion, ethical judgement, and trust that define the doctor-patient relationship.

Speaking at a healthcare event, Kumar highlighted that AI is increasingly transforming the medical sector by supporting disease diagnosis, medical imaging, predictive analytics, treatment planning, and hospital management. These innovations are helping healthcare providers improve efficiency, reduce turnaround time, and deliver more precise and data-driven care.

He emphasised, however, that healthcare extends beyond technology. Every patient requires personalised attention, emotional support, and informed clinical decision-making—qualities that only trained medical professionals can provide. According to Kumar, AI should be regarded as an enabler of better healthcare, assisting doctors in making informed decisions rather than replacing their expertise.

The Health Secretary also stressed the importance of responsible AI adoption, calling for strong safeguards around data privacy, transparency, accountability, and patient safety. He noted that as AI applications continue to expand, it is essential to ensure that technological advancements remain ethical, inclusive, and aligned with the interests of patients.

Highlighting India’s growing focus on digital health and innovation, Kumar said AI has the potential to improve healthcare accessibility, strengthen public health systems, and support clinicians in delivering quality care, particularly in underserved regions. He encouraged greater collaboration among healthcare providers, policymakers, researchers, and technology developers to unlock the full potential of AI in the sector.

Concluding his address, Suresh Kumar reiterated that while AI will continue to reshape healthcare, the human touch of doctors will always remain at the heart of medicine. He said the future of healthcare lies in combining advanced technology with the compassion, experience, and clinical judgement of medical professionals to achieve better outcomes for patients.
