The Government of India has launched Phase III of the Biomedical Research Career Programme (BRCP) with a total outlay of ₹1,500 crore, marking a major investment in strengthening the country’s biomedical research ecosystem and accelerating healthcare innovation. The initiative was unveiled by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh and will be jointly funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), which will contribute ₹1,000 crore, and the UK-based Wellcome Trust, which will provide ₹500 crore.

The programme aims to build a globally competitive biomedical research workforce by supporting basic scientists, clinician-researchers, public health experts, science communicators, and research managers. It also seeks to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, translational research, and scientific excellence, enabling researchers to develop innovative diagnostics, medical technologies, and healthcare solutions that address India’s priority health challenges.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Jitendra Singh said biotechnology is poised to become a key driver of India’s next phase of economic growth, scientific advancement, and global competitiveness. He highlighted that India’s bioeconomy has expanded significantly over the past decade and continues to benefit from strong policy support, a vibrant startup ecosystem, and increased collaboration between academia, industry, and government institutions.

The Minister also stressed the importance of translating laboratory research into real-world healthcare solutions. He called for stronger partnerships with philanthropic organisations and industry stakeholders to accelerate the development of affordable diagnostics, therapies, and medical technologies. The programme will provide continued support through research grants, fellowships, and collaborative projects while encouraging greater participation from international partners.

Launched in 2008, the Biomedical Research Career Programme has already supported more than 500 researchers across over 200 institutions, helping build India’s biomedical research capacity and producing internationally recognised scientific contributions. Phase III will expand this support by fostering innovation, strengthening research infrastructure, and creating opportunities for early- and mid-career scientists to pursue cutting-edge biomedical research.

The latest investment reflects the government’s long-term vision of positioning India as a global biotechnology and healthcare innovation hub. By promoting collaborative research and strengthening the country’s scientific talent pipeline, the initiative is expected to accelerate the development of next-generation healthcare technologies while contributing to improved patient care and public health outcomes.
