Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) unveiled an ambitious expansion of its Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research, and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) in Navi Mumbai, aimed at tackling the rising cancer burden in India. The expansion includes the addition of 13 new operation theatres, including a dedicated robotic-assisted surgery unit, to enhance the hospital’s capacity to handle the increasing demand for cancer care.
ACTREC, which currently serves 50,000-60,000 cancer patients annually, has quickly become one of India’s foremost cancer care centers. With projections indicating a 12.8% rise in India’s cancer burden by 2025, this expansion is timely. It is expected to help ACTREC manage the increasing number of cancer diagnoses and treatments across the nation.
Notably, ACTREC has already completed 51 robotic surgeries in just two months, setting a remarkable milestone as the first government hospital in India to achieve this number in the shortest timeframe. The addition of robotic-assisted surgery to its facilities enables highly precise and minimally invasive treatments, reducing recovery time for patients and improving surgical outcomes.
Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi, Director of ACTREC, highlighted the growing significance of advanced technologies like robotic surgery in the fight against cancer. “Robotic-assisted surgery is essential to tackle complex cancers with enhanced precision. It not only ensures better outcomes but also facilitates faster recovery and reduced hospital stays, which is crucial for patients,” said Dr. Chaturvedi.
The hospital’s infrastructure expansion includes increasing its bed count from 50 to over 500, with 130 dedicated surgical beds, ensuring quicker access to treatments for patients. The enhanced capacity will also help reduce waiting times for surgeries, addressing the urgent need for timely care in the face of India’s growing cancer incidence.
Dr. Sudhir Nair, a senior surgeon at ACTREC, emphasized the importance of the robotic-assisted approach: “The use of robotic technology in surgeries allows us to handle complex procedures with precision, resulting in improved patient recovery and reduced postoperative pain.”
The expansion not only strengthens ACTREC’s capabilities in treating various cancer types, including head and neck, gastrointestinal, urology, and gynecology cancers but also ensures that patients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds can access these advanced treatments at subsidized rates.
With the growing demand for robotic surgeries, ACTREC remains committed to providing affordable, high-quality cancer care while reducing wait times and expanding access for all patients. As Dr. Chaturvedi noted, “This expansion is a significant step toward improving cancer care accessibility in India and ensuring that more patients can benefit from cutting-edge treatments.”
