In a breakthrough aimed at improving post-surgical knee rehabilitation, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar have developed a patented, fully mechanical knee rehab device that could make recovery therapy more accessible and affordable, particularly in rural areas. The Mechanical Passive Motion Machine for Knee Rehabilitation, awarded Patent No. 553407, offers an innovative alternative to costly motorised continuous passive motion (CPM) machines that depend on electricity.

The device, which operates without electricity or batteries, uses a simple piston and pulley system to enable controlled knee movement. When a patient pulls a handle, air is stored within the device, generating a smooth and consistent motion to assist in knee rehabilitation. This entirely mechanical design makes the device lightweight, portable, and cost-effective.

“This device has the potential to revolutionise knee rehabilitation in India, where access to advanced medical technology is often limited, especially in rural areas,” said Dr. Abhishek Tiwari, the lead researcher. “Our goal was to design a low-cost, sustainable solution that aids in recovery without relying on electricity or motors,” he added. The research team included Mr. Suraj Bhan Mundotiya and Dr. Samir C. Roy.

Continuous passive motion therapy is commonly prescribed after knee surgeries to improve joint mobility, reduce stiffness, and accelerate recovery. However, traditional motorised CPM machines are expensive and inaccessible to many, particularly those in remote locations with unreliable electricity. The IIT Ropar team’s device addresses these challenges, offering a self-powered solution that patients can use at home, potentially reducing the need for prolonged hospital stays and frequent clinic visits.

The development of this device is expected to have a profound impact on knee rehabilitation accessibility. By reducing reliance on electricity, the mechanical machine not only opens up therapy options for off-grid communities but also presents an eco-friendly alternative to motorized devices.

With the patent secured, IIT Ropar is optimistic about the future applications of their device. The team’s work is anticipated to expand access to essential healthcare services, advancing knee rehabilitation in India and setting a new standard for affordable medical innovation.
