Himachal Pradesh is facing a troubling increase in breast cancer cases, with the disease now ranking as the second most prevalent cancer among women in the state. Recent data from the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, reveal a rising trend, with an estimated 220 to 250 new breast cancer cases reported annually at its cancer hospital. This upward trend aligns with the overall increase in cancer incidences across Himachal Pradesh, which rose from 8,978 cases in 2021 to 9,566 in 2024, with breast and lung cancer cases being the most common.
National data underscores the urgency of this issue, as breast cancer remains a significant health challenge for women across India. According to Globocon’s 2020 report, a woman in India is diagnosed with breast cancer approximately every four minutes. At IGMC alone, 117 new cases were recorded in 2022, adding to the more than 1,000 women who have sought treatment for breast cancer over the past five years.

Medical experts urge immediate public health initiatives focused on breast cancer awareness, screening, and early detection to address this growing health crisis. Increased awareness and precautionary steps are essential in helping women recognize early symptoms and seek timely intervention, which is critical to improving survival rates and outcomes.
