In two significant developments in India’s healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved the acquisition of Bharat Serums and Vaccines Limited (BSV) by Mankind Pharma Ltd., while the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has achieved Affiliate Membership in the International Medical Device Regulators Forum (IMDRF). These moves highlight the growing emphasis on consolidating pharmaceutical operations and aligning medical device regulations with global standards.
Mankind Pharma’s Acquisition of Bharat Serums and Vaccines Limited
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has officially approved the acquisition of 100% shareholding of Bharat Serums and Vaccines Limited (BSV) by Mankind Pharma Ltd., a public-listed company known for its diverse portfolio in pharmaceuticals and consumer healthcare products. Mankind Pharma’s expertise lies in developing, manufacturing, and marketing a wide range of pharmaceutical finished dosage formulations (FDFs) covering acute and chronic therapeutic areas. Additionally, the company offers several consumer healthcare products, including emergency contraceptives, vitamins, minerals, and anti-acne treatments. Mankind Pharma is also involved in producing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and packaging products for pharmaceuticals through its subsidiaries.
Bharat Serums and Vaccines Limited (BSV) is a key player in biotech and biological formulations, with a focus on gynecology, critical care, and in-vitro fertilization (IVF). The IMDRF, established in 2011, is a global initiative aimed at harmonizing medical device regulations across countries to foster a streamlined and consistent regulatory environment.
This membership marks a significant step for India, positioning CDSCO to align its regulatory framework with international standards, promoting the country’s growing medical device industry on a global platform. IMDRF membership enables CDSCO to collaborate with leading global regulators from countries like the United States, Canada, the European Union, and Japan. Through this partnership, CDSCO aims to enhance its regulatory processes, meet emerging technical challenges, and support innovation in the medical device sector.
As an affiliate member, CDSCO will participate in IMDRF Open Sessions, exchanging technical expertise with global regulators and adopting best practices. This collaboration will also help Indian medical device manufacturers comply with the regulatory requirements of IMDRF member countries, ultimately boosting the international competitiveness of the Indian medical device industry.
