Researchers in India are harnessing the power of Google’s Health Acoustic Representations (HeAR) model to detect life-threatening diseases by analyzing audio data, particularly cough sounds. Google’s HeAR model, launched in March, represents a significant leap forward in using artificial intelligence to identify respiratory conditions such as tuberculosis (TB) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Developed by Google Research, the HeAR model was trained on a vast dataset comprising 300 million audio clips, with a specific focus on 100 million cough sounds. This extensive training allows the model to accurately identify patterns within health-related audio, providing a robust foundation for medical acoustic analysis. According to Shravya Shetty, Google Research’s Director of Engineering, HeAR consistently outperforms other models across a range of tasks and demonstrates superior generalization across different microphones.
In a practical application of this technology, Salcit Technologies, an Indian respiratory healthcare company, has integrated HeAR into its Swaasa app. The app analyzes cough sounds to screen for tuberculosis, a disease that often goes undiagnosed due to limited access to healthcare. “AI can significantly improve TB detection, making care more accessible and affordable,” Shetty emphasized.
The implications of HeAR extend beyond respiratory diseases. The model’s ability to analyze speech patterns—such as tone, pitch, and pace—holds promise for detecting other health issues, including neurological conditions like dementia.

The use of AI in early disease detection is gaining traction worldwide. For instance, the EMethylNET model, developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge, shows potential in early cancer detection and treatment planning. Similarly, New York-based medtech company Ezra utilizes AI-driven imaging to scan vital organs for early signs of cancer, significantly improving survival rates.
As AI technology continues to evolve, models like HeAR are poised to play a crucial role in revolutionizing disease detection, offering low-impact, accessible tools that could transform global healthcare.
