In a bold move towards fostering a healthier nation, Prof. (Dr.) Atul Goel, Director-General of Health Services (DGHS) at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, convened a pivotal meeting with representatives from over 27 major health professional bodies of India. The hybrid meeting aimed to propel the Ministry’s initiatives on health promotion, particularly focusing on healthy diets, physical activity, and the critical reduction of non-communicable disease risk factors, including tobacco and alcohol use.

Key discussions centered around the Healthy Medical/Dental College Campus initiative, which envisions embedding a culture of health and well-being in medical and dental institutions across the country. Dr. Goel highlighted the necessity of channeling healthcare resources towards disease prevention rather than solely concentrating on diagnostic and therapeutic measures.

The meeting also tackled strategies for tobacco and alcohol elimination, emphasizing the reinforcement of the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act 2019. In a unified stance, the professional bodies endorsed a Declaration of Health Promotion, pledging to adopt and promote the principles of health and wellness throughout their networks.

Commending the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s efforts, the attendees stressed the importance of a collaborative approach to health promotion. They agreed on the need for public awareness campaigns, educational initiatives, and robust policy advocacy to curtail the prevalence of tobacco and alcohol use, alongside other health risks.
