The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have reaffirmed their commitment to working together towards promoting global health and fostering stable and equitable societies. This renewed partnership, marked by the signing of a new five-year Memorandum of Understanding, underscores the pivotal role of parliamentarians in enabling good health and well-being worldwide.

The memorandum, signed by Mr. Martin Chungong, IPU Secretary General, and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, at the 148th IPU Assembly in Geneva, solidifies the collaboration between the two organizations. They pledge to continue leveraging their scientific and political mandates to address persistent and emerging health challenges faced by populations globally.

Key areas of cooperation highlighted in the memorandum include universal health coverage, global health security, health promotion, and reducing health inequities, particularly concerning sexual and reproductive health and rights. Additionally, new cross-cutting areas such as responding to climate change, supporting government-led negotiations on a new pandemic agreement, and sustainable financing for health have been included.

Dr. Tedros emphasized the essential role of parliamentarians in shaping policies, prioritizing investments, and ensuring accountability to advance public health. He stressed the importance of political leadership in saving lives, protecting health, and preparing communities and countries to be healthier and safer.

Mr. Martin Chungong echoed the sentiment, noting that another pandemic is inevitable and that parliaments play a crucial role in supporting global health processes. He highlighted the ongoing collaboration between IPU and WHO, including a landmark resolution on achieving universal health coverage, practical resources for parliamentarians, and events bringing together health experts and legislators.

The IPU, as the global organization of national parliaments, has been at the forefront of promoting cooperation, dialogue, peace, democracy, and sustainable development since its founding in 1889. With 180 national Member Parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary bodies, the IPU continues to strengthen parliaments worldwide, advocate for human rights, and drive innovation in governance.

The renewed partnership between WHO and IPU signifies a shared commitment to advancing global health agendas, fostering political leadership for public health, and working towards a healthier, safer world for all.
