The Gujarat government, preparing for the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investor Summit, has underscored its pivotal role in India’s pharmaceutical sector. The state, a powerhouse in pharma manufacturing and exports, employs approximately 50,000 individuals across over 4,000 facilities. These units are diverse, producing allopathic, homoeopathic, ayurvedic, and cosmetic drugs.

Gujarat’s contribution to India’s medical device manufacturing is significant, with 53% of medical devices and 78% of cardiac stents nationally produced here. Additionally, the state is home to 40% of India’s contract research organisations. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel emphasised Gujarat’s leading position, noting its 30% share in national pharmaceutical production and 28% in total pharma exports.

The 10th Vibrant Gujarat event, set for January next year in Gandhinagar, aims to showcase the state as a prime investment destination. The pharmaceutical sector in Gujarat has seen robust growth, with over 700 manufacturing licenses granted between 2020 and 2022. The state is expected to increase its global pharmaceutical market share significantly.

Gujarat boasts 130 pharma companies with United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) approval and 753 WHO Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) approved units. Sharad Patel, chairman of Sotac Pharmaceutical Limited, attributes the sector’s growth to the Vibrant Gujarat initiative, initiated by Narendra Modi.

The state’s pharmaceutical industry is also marked by its innovative approach, expanding into generics, R&D, contract research and manufacturing organisations (CRAMS), bulk drug production, and new chemical entities (NCE).
