All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has unveiled its ambition to adopt the Integrated Nursing Education and Service Model, a notable leap for the renowned medical institution. This pioneering approach, which has received the green light from the Indian Nursing Council, is set to elevate the calibre of patient care whilst refining the clinical competencies of nursing undergraduates.

Known as the Dual Role model, this integration of nursing service and education has been flourishing in esteemed institutions such as the College of Nursing at CMC Vellore and the St. John’s College of Nursing in Bengaluru. Both have showcased how the model impeccably bridges theoretical knowledge with practical application, thereby elevating nursing protocols and optimally positioning nursing staff in diverse healthcare capacities.

To navigate the nuances of this new adoption, AIIMS Delhi has set up a dedicated committee, spearheaded by its director, Dr. M Srinivas. This committee’s remit is to delve into the Indian Nursing Council’s directive on this integration, gauging its prospective merits and potential pitfalls. By examining the journey of institutions that have trodden this path before, the committee aims to craft a holistic proposal tailored for AIIMS Delhi. Their guidelines, slated for submission by 30 November 2023, will inform AIIMS Delhi’s trajectory in materialising this forward-thinking model.

Dr. Rima Dada, overseeing the media cell, shared her fervour for this initiative, emphasizing its potential to boost both the standard of nursing care and the practical skill set of nursing students. It is also projected to maximise the deployment of nursing personnel across educational and clinical spheres.

This new chapter in nursing education at AIIMS Delhi stands poised to both reshape nursing pedagogy and bolster healthcare provisions. With the medical fraternity watching with bated breath, the model’s inception holds promising implications for India’s healthcare panorama.
