Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of India, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, to provide high-quality healthcare services to all citizens of the state during his visit to West Bengal. The Union Health Minister’s visit included a comprehensive review of several vital health programs aimed at delivering improved healthcare access and services to the people of West Bengal.

Among the programs assessed were the Ayushman Bharat Health & Wellness Centres, the National TB Elimination Program, the disbursement status of funds under the National Health Mission (NHM), the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), Telemedicine services, Medical Education initiatives, and the Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Program.


Speaking during the occasion, Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the significance of the Ayushman Bharat Health & Wellness Centre initiative, describing it as a crucial step towards providing comprehensive primary healthcare services to individuals in proximity to their homes.

Under the National Health Mission, West Bengal has received substantial resources, including approval for 800 Sub-Centres at a cost of Rs. 288.72 crores, 2 Urban Community Health Centres costing Rs. 10 crores, and 37 new urban PHCs with a total investment of Rs. 27.75 crores. Notably, 404 Ayushman Bharat Urban Health and Wellness Centres have also been given the green light.

Dr. Mandaviya’s review extended to the National Tuberculosis Elimination Program, where he stressed the government’s commitment to eradicating tuberculosis by 2025. He further highlighted the effective utilization of funds released under the National Health Mission.


The Union Health Minister provided insights into the infrastructural advancements as well. West Bengal has seen the approval of 223 Block Public Health Units at a cost of Rs. 180.12 crores and 719 sub-centres with an investment of Rs. 290 crores under the 15th Finance Commission. Moreover, the state has operationalized 10,358 Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres, registering an impressive footfall of 16,82,87,430. Additionally, the provision of teleconsultations reached 2,08,42,397.

Addressing the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) and Telemedicine services, Dr. Mandaviya underscored their significance in delivering quality healthcare. He highlighted the sanctioning of 22 Critical Care Blocks amounting to Rs. 727 crores, as well as 23 Integrated Public Health Labs at a cost of Rs. 47.38 crores. The approval of 510 Urban Health and Wellness Centres, requiring an investment of Rs. 535.50 crores, further demonstrated the growth in healthcare infrastructure.

Dr. Mandaviya’s review extended to the realm of Medical Education and the Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Program. He reaffirmed the commitment to delivering quality medical education and ensuring the success of the Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Program for the people of West Bengal.
