Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) has reached a milestone of 5 crore hospital admissions, totaling Rs 61,501 crore under the scheme. This flagship initiative, implemented by the National Health Authority (NHA), offers health coverage of Rs. 5 lakhs per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation to 12 crore beneficiary families.
CEO of NHA expressed, “AB PM-JAY was launched with the vision to achieve Universal Health Coverage. As we enter its fifth year of implementation, the scheme continues to support millions of beneficiaries from impoverished and vulnerable families, reducing their out-of-pocket medical expenses. Through dedicated efforts, we have accomplished various milestones for PM-JAY in the current year, including issuing 9.28 crore Ayushman Cards to beneficiaries, achieving 100 per cent fund utilisation, and authorizing 1.65 crore hospital admissions in 2022-23.”
AB PM-JAY is being implemented in 33 States and Union Territories (UTs), with the exception of Delhi, Odisha, and West Bengal. So far, 23.39 crore beneficiaries have been verified and issued Ayushman Cards, enabling them to access free treatment under the scheme. Co-branded PVC Ayushman Cards are issued to the beneficiaries.
The PM-JAY empanelled hospital network comprises 28,351 hospitals, including 12,824 private hospitals, across the country. In the year 2022-23, approximately 56 per cent of the total admissions (in terms of amount) were authorised in private hospitals, while 44 per cent were authorised in public hospitals.
AB PM-JAY beneficiaries have access to a wide range of medical procedures, encompassing 1,949 treatments across 27 specialties. Notably, the top tertiary care specialties availed by beneficiaries to date are medical oncology (cancer treatment), emergency care, orthopedics, and urology (kidney-related ailments).
Furthermore, the scheme emphasizes gender equity in accessing quality healthcare. As a result of these inclusive policies, around 49% of Ayushman Card recipients are women, and over 48 per cent of the total authorised hospital admissions under the AB PM-JAY scheme have been availed by women. Moreover, more than 141 medical procedures under PM-JAY are exclusively designated for women.
