Mega walkathon

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare organises the mega-walkathon event “WalkforHealth” in New Delhi. Participants took part in the walk with tremendous fervour and in vast numbers, all in the sake of better health. Such gatherings are planned to enhance both physical and mental health.

Reflecting the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister for a healthy India, the walkathon and related events seek to modify individuals’ behaviour and raise awareness of the benefits of leading an active lifestyle. The Union Health Minister, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, who is also known as a “Green MP” for his love of cycling, has been advancing such projects through promoting physical activity for health and fitness. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are known to cause more than 63% of deaths in the nation and are causally linked to significant risk factors for behaviour like tobacco use (smoking and smokeless), alcohol use, poor dietary practices, insufficient physical activity, and air pollution.

One of the main risk factors for the development of NCDs is physical inactivity. The National NCD Monitoring Survey (NNMS) (2017–18) also found that 41.3% of Indians are physically inactive. Physical activity not only lowers the incidence of NCDs including cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, but it also has good impacts on mental health, slows the onset of dementia, and generally improves well-being.

On March 5, 2023, district offices across the nation will host a cycling event to celebrate today’s International Women’s Day and to encourage environmentally friendly transportation. “Healthy Women, Healthy India” served as the theme for the Cyclathon event.

The district health authority has made every effort to encourage regular people to take part in this cycling event. As implied by the event’s subject, women’s health is as vital. Healthy women make a positive contribution to their families, community, and ultimately make India a healthier country.

However, a second event called “Walk for Health” was also organised in Delhi to support physical fitness and health in addition to the cycling event at the district headquarters. The ceremony began at Vijay Chowk, travelled along Kartavya Way, passed by India Gate, and ended at Nirman Bhawan.
