The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) is setting a benchmark for progress in digital healthcare, with a strong framework and accreditation support to hospitals and healthcare providers in India. Dr Atul Mohan Kochhar, Chief Executive Officer, NABH, shared his insights on the roll-out of Digital Health, in alignment with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). Edited excerpts:

Speaking at the 10th Elets Healthcare Innovation Summit held on 22-23 June, Kochhar said, “NABH is present in about 13 countries with 3 broad categories of accreditation and certification.”

 

NABH catalysed the Covid-19 pandemic as an opportunity to strengthen the tech-driven innovations. “The pandemic taught us a lot about the significance of technology. We had to change our methodology to tackle challenges during the troubled times,” he said.

The traditional NABH approach was to serve the hospitals based on their standards and to release reports on standardised accreditation and certification. “We had to divide 214 policies; and standardise, validate & assess them. Many start-ups helped in the process of adapting to innovations,” said Kochhar

Hailing technology adoption in India, he said, “With innovative initiatives like Aadhaar and Cowin, the country has showcased its potential to the world. Now, we wish to witness the next level of technological solutions under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM),” Kochhar said, adding that over the next few years, the country is going to witness tremendous advancements and changes in healthcare.

He further highlighted that the ABDM framework has already been implemented, tried and tested in eight Union Territories. “More than 26 thousand hospitals have already been onboarded. There are huge teams working on it and it will be integrated soon.”

HOPE: Healthcare Organisations’ Platform for Entry-Level Certification

Kochhar emphasised on the key role technology plays in improving healthcare. Revamping the entry-level certification process, NABH is facilitating service through a portal called HOPE – Healthcare Organisations’ Platform for Entry-Level, in a simple and user-friendly manner. “This game changer model was much-appreciated across the globe,” he said.

He further said, “Our accreditation standards are very elaborate and the best in the world.”
