The Tata Group on April 4 announced that it has developed a first-of-its kind watch designed exclusively for Tata Steel factory workers and has pitched its plan to sell wearable devices to tech-savvy consumers and other manufacturing companies in future.

The watch targeting shop floor has been hailed as a unique product for the market. Designed by multiple Tata Group companies, it provides critical real-time safety data, such as body temperature, pulse rate and also excessive gases in the work environment.

Equipped with an analogue display with digital sensors, the watch will enable one track the worker in his/her work environment. Moreover, it is supported by the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) cloud-based analytics platform, designed by Tata Elxsi and will be manufactured by Titan.

The basic idea came from Tata Steel workers, with user inputs from Tata Chemicals and Tata Motors, whose shop floors will also benefit.

The group is also working in new areas, such as soft robotics, bio-inspired products, stretch sensors, gene editing and deep learning. It focuses on delivering technology or creating breakthrough innovations by harnessing synergies between group companies.
