Agfa HealthCare, a leading provider of diagnostic imaging and healthcare IT solutions, has implemented IMPAX, its archiving and communication system (PACS) at the University Hospital in Krakow, Poland. The installation replaces the hospital’s existing system of disparate, standalone diagnostic stations with an IMPAX 6 solution, which fully integrates with the radiology information system (RIS) and the hospital information system (HIS). The 200-year old University Hospital in Krakow is comprised of 32 departments and 60 out-patient clinics. As a referral hospital covering practically all medical specialties, it serves the 6 million people in the south-eastern region of Poland. Some 37 million medical images are taken each year within the hospital, equaling a total of about 19 terabytes of data. To better manage the large amount of imaging data, the University Hospital selected Agfa HealthCare to implement IMPAX, which integrates with both its existing RIS and HIS systems. The solution, whose installation was completed on 4 February 2011, includes four blade servers, 25 diagnostic display stations and VMware virtualization technology. Data is managed in an Oracle database, with long-term archiving in the LTO library. All patient information is protected with the highest security level.
