The Department of Veterans Affairs and the Indian Health Service will team up to improve the health status of American Indian and Alaska Native veterans, in part by developing health IT tools to improve care. A memorandum of understanding signed by both groups outlines a plan for increased collaboration and sharing of resources, drawing on the agencies’ respective expertise and strengths. The plan’s outline includes: Ways to share technology; Creating interoperable systems to share patient and population information; and Developing standard language to be included in sharing agreements. The agencies also will seek to implement new, technology-based models of care that include: Enhanced infrastructure to support rural areas; Mobile communication technologies; and Telehealth services.
