The United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has closed its inspection of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories’ FTO-SEZ Process Unit-02 in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, classifying the outcome as Voluntary Action Indicated (VAI). The Hyderabad-based drugmaker disclosed the development to the stock exchanges on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, stating that the regulator had concluded the inspection under 21 CFR 20.64(d)(3).

The classification brings a formal end to a regulatory process that began in July, when a USFDA inspection of the site ended with observations for the company to address.
From Form 483 to Closure
The USFDA carried out a combined Pre-Approval Inspection (PAI) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) inspection at the Srikakulam unit between 20 and 29 July 2026. At its conclusion, Dr. Reddy’s received a Form 483 carrying three observations. In its July disclosure, the company said it would respond to the findings within the stipulated timeline. It did not make public the nature of the observations.

A pre-approval inspection is typically linked to pending product applications, which means the outcome at a site can have a bearing on when new products from that facility reach the US market. The company has not specified which filings were tied to this inspection.
The latest outcome follows a similar pattern at another Dr. Reddy’s unit in Srikakulam, the FTO-SEZ PU01 formulations facility. That unit underwent a GMP and pre-approval inspection in December 2025, and Dr. Reddy’s reported in March 2026 that it had received the Establishment Inspection Report, with the USFDA classifying that outcome as VAI as well.
What VAI, OAI and NAI Mean
The USFDA assigns one of three classifications after inspecting a drug manufacturing facility:
- No Action Indicated (NAI): investigators found no objectionable conditions or practices.
- Voluntary Action Indicated (VAI): objectionable conditions or practices were found, but the agency is not prepared to take or recommend any administrative or regulatory action.
- Official Action Indicated (OAI): the agency recommends regulatory and/or administrative action.
A VAI outcome therefore places the onus on the manufacturer to fix the issues flagged, without the facility attracting formal enforcement.
Financial Backdrop
The regulatory update comes days after Dr. Reddy’s reported its results for the September quarter. On 23 October 2026, the company posted consolidated revenue of ₹8,670.8 crore for Q2 FY27, down 1.5% year-on-year but up 7.4% from the preceding quarter. Profit after tax attributable to equity holders stood at ₹925 crore, 36% lower than a year earlier, while EBITDA came in at about ₹1,783 crore, a margin of 20.6%. Management attributed the year-on-year decline largely to lower lenalidomide sales in North America, and said the underlying base business grew in double digits.
The first quarter had been weighed down by a provision of about ₹240 crore towards inventory and related costs linked to semaglutide active pharmaceutical ingredient.
Commenting on the quarter, Co-Chairman and Managing Director G V Prasad said the company “continued to improve the overall health of our business, delivering double-digit base business growth and EBITDA margins of over 20% during the quarter,” adding that it remained focused on strengthening its core businesses, enhancing productivity and investing in strategic growth platforms.
Why Compliance Remains the Currency of Market Access
For India’s pharmaceutical exporters, USFDA inspection outcomes are more than a regulatory formality. They influence how quickly new products can be approved, how buyers and partners assess supply reliability, and how investors judge manufacturing risk. Closing out observations promptly and building quality systems that hold up under repeated scrutiny remain central to sustaining access to the world’s most demanding drug markets.
