Sudarshan Pharma Industries, a Maharashtra-based maker of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), is stepping into advanced therapies. Its board has approved the acquisition of a 9.5% equity stake in MedTherapy Biotechnology Inc., a Delaware-incorporated company that develops and manufactures CAR-T cell and gene therapies for cancer.

Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Boston, MedTherapy runs a technology development centre in the US and a commercial-scale GMP manufacturing facility in New Delhi. That two-country footprint is central to the investment case: Sudarshan Pharma expects the stake to open a route into the US market and give it access to MedTherapy’s customers, contracts and distribution network.
Deal terms and timeline
According to the company, the consideration will be set in line with prevailing valuation norms and paid in US dollars. The transaction is expected to be completed by 31 March 2027.

Investors welcomed the move. Sudarshan Pharma’s shares rose nearly 7% on Wednesday, 28 October, touching an intraday high of ₹37.30 against a previous close of ₹34.88. The company’s market capitalisation stands at roughly ₹950 crore.
From APIs to cell therapy
Sudarshan Pharma’s core business is API manufacturing, alongside trading in chemicals and solvents, with plants in Maharashtra and Hyderabad. In Q1 FY27 it reported consolidated net profit of ₹5.86 crore, up 45.05% year on year, on revenue of ₹174.42 crore, up 20.07%.
A minority stake in a CAR-T developer is a small but notable bet for a mid-sized API player. India’s cell and gene therapy segment has gained momentum since the approval of domestically developed CAR-T treatments, and locally manufactured therapies promise to bring costs far below Western price points. For companies like Sudarshan, such partnerships offer a way to diversify beyond commodity chemistry into high-value biologics without building capabilities from scratch.
The move also reflects a wider trend in Indian pharma, where companies are looking to complex modalities and overseas footholds to drive their next phase of growth.
