The Assam government has approved a Rs 50,000 crore development package aimed at accelerating infrastructure, healthcare, education, welfare and other capital-intensive projects across the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the package as part of a broader development push focused on strengthening public infrastructure and expanding opportunities for people across Assam.

The Rs 50,000 crore package will be implemented over seven years beginning in 2027-28. The funding will be mobilised through Assam’s own resources, support from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and various Central government schemes.

The planned investments will cover several sectors, including education, healthcare, housing, flood protection, roads, power and industrial infrastructure. The package includes provisions for upgrading 1,000 high schools, with Rs 7 crore allocated for each school, along with the establishment of 6,000 new Anganwadi centres. The government also plans to develop women’s markets and sports facilities across constituencies.

Healthcare has emerged as a major component of the development programme. The Assam Cabinet has approved Rs 600 crore for setting up a Proton Beam Therapy facility at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The facility is expected to provide advanced cancer treatment within the public healthcare system and reduce the need for patients from the Northeast to travel outside the region for specialised cancer care.

The Proton Beam Therapy facility is planned as a major addition to Assam’s cancer-care infrastructure. According to the Chief Minister, Assam would become the first state in India to have a proton beam therapy unit in the public healthcare sector. The project is expected to be financed through a combination of World Bank assistance and state government funding.

The broader package also includes strengthening primary healthcare facilities, Anganwadi centres, road connectivity and electricity networks. Flood-control infrastructure, including anti-flood embankments, is another priority given Assam’s recurring flood-related challenges.

The development push is also expected to support employment generation and economic activity. The state government is focusing on attracting investment, strengthening industrial infrastructure and creating new opportunities for Assam’s growing workforce.

Alongside infrastructure and healthcare, the Chief Minister has highlighted the development of sports infrastructure and improved international connectivity. A direct flight to Bangkok is expected to strengthen Assam’s links with Southeast Asia and support tourism, trade, business and people-to-people exchanges.

The combination of infrastructure investment, advanced healthcare facilities, education, employment, sports and connectivity forms part of Assam’s broader effort to strengthen its position as an economic and connectivity hub in the Northeast.

The government is positioning these investments as long-term measures to improve public services, strengthen infrastructure and support Assam’s development goals.
