Delhi is stepping up surveillance and preparedness measures as H1N1 influenza cases continue to rise across the capital. According to the latest Delhi government data, the city has reported 1,777 H1N1 cases so far in 2026, including 114 new cases recorded on August 20.

H1N1 has emerged as the predominant Influenza A subtype in Delhi this year. The capital has recorded 2,392 Influenza A cases cumulatively till August 20, while the total number of seasonal influenza cases, including Influenza B, has reached 2,602.

The rise in cases has prompted health authorities to strengthen monitoring of influenza, influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI). The Delhi government is conducting daily surveillance to track the spread of the infection and identify any unusual increase or clustering of cases.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda also reviewed the influenza situation and preparedness of healthcare facilities, with a particular focus on the National Capital. The review covered surveillance, epidemiological trends, testing, laboratory monitoring and the preparedness of hospitals to manage seasonal influenza cases.

Authorities have maintained that hospitals in Delhi have adequate beds, doctors, medicines and essential medical equipment to manage the current situation. Health officials have also issued guidance on respiratory hygiene, mask use, timely medical consultation and home care.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has clarified that no new H1N1 strain has been detected in India. Scientists have said that the currently circulating virus is consistent with seasonal influenza and closely matches strains included in recommended vaccines.

While seasonal influenza is generally self-limiting, young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with underlying health conditions remain at greater risk of complications. Health authorities have advised people to seek medical attention if symptoms persist, worsen or include breathing difficulties.

The intensified surveillance and preparedness measures are aimed at ensuring early detection, timely treatment and effective management of influenza cases while preventing unnecessary public concern.
