Novo Nordisk Expands Cell Therapy Partnership with Aspect Biosystems for Diabetes

Novo Nordisk has expanded its collaboration with Aspect Biosystems to accelerate the development of cell-based therapies for diabetes, strengthening a partnership that was first established in 2023.

Under the revised agreement, Aspect Biosystems will lead development, manufacturing and future commercialisation of the diabetes cell therapy programmes. Novo Nordisk will continue to provide research funding and make an additional equity investment in Aspect, while retaining defined rights to increase its role in later stages of development and commercialisation.

The expanded partnership includes the transfer of selected research and manufacturing activities from Novo Nordisk’s operations in the United States and Denmark to Aspect’s facilities in Canada, consolidating capabilities within Aspect’s platform. The collaboration focuses on the development of insulin-producing cells derived from stem cells and engineered cells designed to resist immune system attacks.

Aspect’s technology uses 3D bioprinting and bio-inks derived from human pancreatic tissue and alginate to create implantable tissue structures for diabetes treatment. Novo Nordisk will be eligible for milestone payments and royalties on future product sales, although financial terms were not disclosed.

The expansion builds on the existing partnership as both companies continue advancing cell-based approaches for diabetes therapy.
