In a major milestone for India’s traditional medicine systems, the Ministry of Ayush and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have formalised a partnership to integrate Ayush practices into the global healthcare framework. The agreement, signed on May 24, 2025, marks the commencement of a dedicated Traditional Medicine module under the International Classification of Health Interventions (ICHI), a companion tool to WHO’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11).
Announcing the development during the 122nd episode of his monthly radio address, Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi lauded the initiative, stating, “This step will ensure that Ayush reaches the maximum number of people across the world scientifically and credibly.” The Prime Minister emphasised the transformative potential of the collaboration, particularly in establishing Ayush therapies, such as Panchakarma, Yoga therapy, Siddha procedures, and Unani regimen, within globally recognised medical standards.

The inclusion of a Traditional Medicine module in the ICHI framework is expected to bring wide-ranging benefits:

- Standardised global recognition of Ayush interventions
- Improved billing transparency and fair pricing mechanisms
- Easier integration of Ayush services into health insurance schemes
- Streamlined hospital management and enhanced clinical documentation
- Strengthened evidence-based research on traditional medicine

Welcoming the collaboration, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed his appreciation via social media: “Pleased to sign an agreement for a $3 million contribution from India to WHO’s work on traditional medicine and ICHI development. We value India’s enduring commitment to #HealthForAll.”

The agreement aligns with India’s strategic vision to elevate its rich heritage of traditional health systems onto the global stage, reinforcing its credibility through rigorous scientific validation and international classification. As Ayush becomes embedded within the global health architecture, this initiative marks a pivotal step in making holistic and accessible healthcare a global reality.
