Granules India's finished dosage manufacturing facility at Gagillapur, Hyderabad, lit up at dusk

The US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has issued a Form 483 with 11 observations to Granules India’s finished dosage facility at Gagillapur, Hyderabad. The current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) inspection ran from 19 to 30 October 2026 and was the first USFDA visit to the site since the regulator issued a Warning Letter in February 2025.

What the USFDA Form 483 for Granules covers

In its stock exchange disclosure dated 30 October 2026, Granules said the observations relate to “enhancements” in five areas:

  • investigations
  • change control
  • process and equipment qualification
  • visual-inspection controls
  • documentation practices

The company said none of the 11 observations relate to data integrity or cross-contamination, and that manufacturing and distribution from the site are not affected. It plans to send a full response to the USFDA within the required 15 business days.

“The inspection progressed constructively, and the observations are of a nature that we believe can be fully addressed through our responses and corrective and preventive actions,” Dr Krishna Prasad Chigurupati, Chairman and Managing Director of Granules India, said, as reported by ETPharma.

Why this reinspection matters after the 2025 Warning Letter

The Gagillapur unit has been under close watch since an August–September 2024 inspection. The Warning Letter of 26 February 2025 cited inadequate cleaning and maintenance of air-handling ducts, residues and microbial contamination found downstream of HEPA filters, poor upkeep of the air-handling area and weak equipment calibration and oversight.

Against that record, the fact that the new observations do not touch data integrity or cross-contamination is the key signal for the industry. Even so, a Form 483 means the site has not yet been cleared. Its final status will depend on how the USFDA classifies the inspection after reviewing Granules’ corrective and preventive action (CAPA) plan.

What it means for Indian generic makers

USFDA inspections remain one of the biggest swing factors for Indian generic drugmakers that supply the US market. Recent outcomes have varied: Dr. Reddy’s Srikakulam unit, for example, got a Voluntary Action Indicated (VAI) tag after a three-observation Form 483. At the same time, the industry is leaning harder on exports, which rose 4.9% to $16.14 billion in H1 FY27, and on regulated markets beyond the US, as Strides Pharma’s latest results show.

For quality and manufacturing teams, the five areas flagged at Gagillapur are a familiar checklist. Strong investigations, tight change control, qualified processes and equipment, and clean documentation are what decide whether a remediation plan closes out a Warning Letter.

Key takeaways

  • The USFDA issued a Form 483 with 11 observations after inspecting Granules’ Gagillapur finished dosage plant from 19 to 30 October 2026.
  • It was the first inspection since the site’s February 2025 Warning Letter.
  • Granules says no observation concerns data integrity or cross-contamination, and supply from the site continues.
  • The company will respond to the USFDA within 15 business days.

FAQ

What is a USFDA Form 483?

Does the Form 483 stop production at Gagillapur?

No. Granules said there is no impact on manufacturing or distribution of products from the site.

What happens next?

Granules will submit its response within 15 business days. The USFDA will then review it and decide how to classify the inspection.
