NU Hospitals leadership at the unveiling of the AMS EDGE robotic surgical system in Bengaluru

Bengaluru-based NU Hospitals, a specialty institution focused on urology, nephrology, fertility and kidney transplantation, has added robotic-assisted surgery to its clinical programme with the unveiling of the AMS EDGE Robotic Surgical System. The hospital paired the launch with a new patient-facing mobile platform, the NU App, signalling a wider push to digitise both the operating theatre and the patient journey.

What the AMS EDGE system brings to the theatre

The AMS EDGE platform uses four flexible robotic arms with articulated instruments and high-definition 3D vision that magnifies the surgical field up to ten times. AI-assisted imaging, indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence and advanced display tools are designed to help surgeons see anatomical structures more clearly during complex urological and renal procedures.

The system also supports telesurgery, allowing remote connectivity and collaboration between surgical teams. For a hospital group that already operates across several locations, that capability opens the door to shared expertise beyond a single campus.

Compared with open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, robotic assistance gives surgeons greater instrument flexibility and better visualisation. Depending on the patient and procedure, this can translate into lower blood loss, less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery.

“Our focus has always been to advance specialised healthcare while keeping patients at the centre of every decision,” said Dr Prasanna Venkatesh M K, Managing Director, NU Hospitals, who is also a senior consultant paediatric urologist and robotic and renal transplant surgeon. He said the move reflects the hospital’s commitment to innovations that support surgical expertise and improve precision.

One app for the patient journey

The NU App brings appointment booking, online payments, consultations, medical records and reports, prescriptions, medicine orders and home laboratory sample collection onto a single platform, so patients do not have to juggle separate channels for routine interactions with the hospital.

“Technology can make a meaningful difference when it simplifies care for patients and supports clinical teams,” said Dr Dilip Rangarajan, Group Medical Director, NU Hospitals.

Chairman Dr Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy said the hospital’s responsibility is to keep improving and embrace meaningful advancements while keeping compassionate care central. Actor and filmmaker Ramesh Aravind attended the launch as chief guest. The hospital also released The Link 2024–26, its publication documenting the institution’s journey.

Scale and footprint

NU Hospitals says it has performed more than 750 kidney transplants and over 200 robotic surgeries, including more than 50 paediatric robotic procedures. It runs three branches in Bengaluru, at Rajajinagar, Padmanabhanagar and Mission Road, along with centres in Shivamogga, Ambur in Tamil Nadu, and the Maldives.

Why it matters

Robotic surgery in India is moving beyond large multi-specialty chains into focused specialty hospitals, while patient apps are becoming the default front door to care. NU Hospitals’ twin launch shows how mid-sized specialty providers are investing in AI-enabled surgical tools and integrated digital services together, an approach that is likely to shape competition in nephro-uro care in the years ahead.
