In a significant update, renowned academician and surgeon Dr M K Ramesh has officially taken over as the new President of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), a key vertical under the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Dr Ramesh brings with him decades of experience in clinical practice, medical education, and healthcare administration. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) in Bengaluru and had previously held the position of President of the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) within NMC.

A graduate of Mysore Medical College and Research Institute, Dr Ramesh earned his MBBS and MS in General Surgery before attaining a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), England—a testament to his global academic outlook and commitment to surgical excellence.

His professional journey includes pivotal roles at Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), where he began as a lecturer and rose through academic ranks. He was also entrusted with the role of Registrar (Evaluation) at RGUHS, later assuming charge as Acting Vice-Chancellor in 2017. He returned to BMCRI in 2019 to lead the Department of Surgery.

His latest appointment to MARB was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) following a recommendation by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as per the provisions of the NMC Act, 2019. The appointment is for a four-year term or until he attains the age of 70, whichever comes first.

Dr Ramesh succeeds Dr B N Gangadhar, who vacated the MARB post upon taking over as the Chairperson of the National Medical Commission.

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board plays a crucial role in regulating standards for medical institutions across India, including approvals for new colleges, course capacities, and accreditation frameworks. As its President, Dr Ramesh will be at the helm of steering institutional quality and reforms in medical education infrastructure.

His appointment is expected to reinforce transparency, quality control, and streamlined governance in India’s evolving medical education ecosystem.
