Ankura Hospital

Ankura Hospital for Women and Children in Bhubaneswar, a recognised leader in women’s healthcare, has achieved another significant milestone by conducting India’s inaugural International Workshop on Gynecologic Microwave Ablation (MWA). Organised in collaboration with the International Microwave Ablation Academy (IMAA) and Nuvarium Medical Academy, this pioneering event brought together globally acclaimed experts. It focused on minimally invasive treatments for uterine fibroids and adenomyosis.

The workshop was led by renowned Ablation Therapy specialist—Dr. Xiaoming Gong from China and Dr. Suyash Naval from India—who shared their expertise in advanced, micro-invasive procedures. Dr. GSS Mohapatra, Head of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgeries and Endometriosis at Ankura Hospital, was the event’s organising chairman.

“Microwave Ablation (MWA) therapy represents a breakthrough in gynecologic care, offering a highly effective, super-minimally invasive solution for treating fibroids and adenomyosis,” explained Dr. Mohapatra. “Fibroids, benign tumors of the uterus, and adenomyosis, a painful uterine condition, can lead to severe pain, excessive bleeding, and even infertility. MWA is an innovative technique that uses microwave energy to safely and effectively destroy these problematic tissues without the need for major surgery.”

The workshop featured live demonstrations of MWA procedures, lectures, and case studies to educate gynaecologists and obstetricians across India on this next-generation treatment. Participants had the unique opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge through hands-on learning experiences.

Dr. Mohapatra elaborated on the benefits of MWA, stating, “This technique is ideal for women who wish to preserve their uterus, especially for future pregnancies, or those seeking an alternative to traditional surgeries like open hysterectomy. The MWA procedure involves inserting a microwave antenna directly into the fibroid or adenomyotic tissue, which is then destroyed in less than a second by raising the tissue temperature to over 65 degrees Celsius. The procedure is minimally invasive, using laparoscopy or ultrasound guidance (LUMWA), and results in minimal pain, fast recovery, and no scarring.”

Ankura Hospital for Women and Children has long been a leader in providing cutting-edge treatments for women’s health, and this workshop underscores its commitment to advancing gynecologic care in India. The hospital recently established a Center of Excellence in Endometriosis and Advanced Gynecologic Laparoscopic Surgeries, further cementing its reputation as a leader in women’s healthcare. With the successful completion of this landmark workshop, Ankura Hospital continues to pave the way for the adoption of advanced, patient-friendly treatments that improve the quality of life for women suffering from debilitating conditions like fibroids and adenomyosis.
