In a momentous occasion, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and H.E. Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan, jointly inaugurated the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital in Thimphu. This state-of-the-art hospital, constructed with the assistance of the Government of India, marks a significant milestone in the India-Bhutan partnership in healthcare.

The Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital, a 150-bedded facility, is the result of a collaborative effort between the two nations. The first phase of the hospital, operational since 2019, was constructed at a cost of Rs. 22 Crores. Subsequently, the second phase, completed under the 12th Five Year Plan, was undertaken at a cost of Rs. 119 Crores, further enhancing the hospital’s capabilities.


The newly inaugurated hospital is poised to elevate the quality of mother and child health services in Bhutan significantly. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Anesthesiology, Operation Theatre, Neonatal Intensive Care, and Pediatric Intensive Care, the hospital is well-prepared to address a wide range of healthcare needs for mothers and children.

The Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital is not just a healthcare facility but also a symbol of the enduring partnership and friendship between India and Bhutan. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of both nations to improving healthcare infrastructure and services for the well-being of their citizens.
