Cancer continues to be one of the most significant health challenges of our time, relentlessly claiming lives across the globe. This devastating disease, which manifests in various forms, targets the body’s cells, leading to uncontrolled growth and division. Among these, stomach cancer, particularly in its advanced stages, presents a formidable battle for patients and healthcare professionals alike.
In a saddening development, the entertainment industry has lost one of its cherished members to this ruthless illness. Junior Mehmood, a veteran actor known for his remarkable contributions to Indian cinema, has passed away at the age of 67. He was battling stage four stomach cancer. His friend, Salam Kazi, confirmed the news of his demise. Born Naeem Sayyed, Junior Mehmood made a name for himself in films such as “Caravan”, “Haathi Mere Saathi”, and “Mera Naam Joker”. His journey in the film industry began as a child artist in movies like “Mohabbat Zindagi Hai” (1966) and “Naunihal” (1967). The screen name Junior Mehmood was bestowed upon him by the renowned actor Mehmood after they collaborated in the 1968 film “Suhaag”.

According to popular actor Johny Lever, Junior Mehmood was receiving treatment at Tata Memorial Hospital in Parel. Despite his deteriorating health, Mehmood seldom discussed his condition openly. Lever, who was in regular contact with Mehmood, only became aware of the severity of his illness about ten days before his passing.

Several prominent figures from the film industry, including Jeetendra, Sachin Pilgaonkar, and Johny Lever, visited Junior Mehmood during his final days. Jeetendra, deeply moved during his visit, had shared the screen with Mehmood in films such as “Suhaag Raat” and “Caravan”. Sachin Pilgaonkar, reflecting on their childhood friendship, took to Instagram to request prayers for Junior Mehmood’s well-being.

This tragic loss underscores the urgent need to raise awareness about cancer and its impact. To contribute to this vital cause, we are organising the Elets National Cancer Summit & Awards. This event aims to bring together experts, survivors, and advocates to share knowledge, experiences, and strategies to combat cancer effectively. By fostering a deeper understanding and promoting advanced research, we hope to pave the way for better prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this life-threatening disease, offering hope and support to those affected.
