Gujarat enters the list of Coronavirus infected states with 2 cases reported positive on Thursday, March 19. The two confirmed cases were reported from Surat and Rajkot adding on to the toll of COVID-19 infected people in the country. As per the sources, there are two more cases which are suspected and the results for tests are awaited.
Dr Jayanti Ravi, Principal Secretary to the State’s Health Department said, both the infected persons are stable and are not in need for ventilator. Nitin Patel, Deputy Chief Minister and Minster for the Department of Health said, “One patient from Rajkot and one from Surat have tested positive for coronavirus. Our health team is carrying out the treatment of the infected persons and we have also started tracking people who came in contact with the two before they were admitted to the hospitals. The family members of both the persons have been quarantined.”
The person found positive for COVID-19 had visited Medina in Saudi Arabia with 10 of his family members. The 32-year old individual developed symptoms on March 17 and was admitted to PDU Medical College at Rajkot Civil Hospital. The nasal sample from the infected was taken and tested at MP Shah Medical College in Jamnagar, the only testing centre in saurashtra region, where he was tested positive for the viral infection.
The second case detected in Surat is a 21-year old who recently returned from United Kingdom. She had taken a flight from London to Mumbai. She started showing symptoms like cough and high fever on March 16 and then was admitted to New Civil Hospital (NCH) in Surat. Sample recovered from her was sent for testing to BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad where it was found that the samples test positive for COVID-19. As per the Gujarat Health Deaprtment, the authorities have identified around 9 people who came in contact with her and have quarantined them.
A total of 150 samples have been tested in Gujarat out of which 123 have been tested negative. The results for 25 are awaited.
