IntraPace has received European CE mark approval for its abiliti system as a treatment for obesity. The device looks similar to a pacemaker and is implanted in a simple and minimally invasive procedure. Once implanted the device detects when a person eats or drinks, and sends low level electrical impulses to the stomach. This stimulation is designed to help people feel full before the stomach actually is, reducing food intake. In addition, the system automatically a record when a patient eats, drinks, and exercises, and using a wireless connection, the data can be viewed by the patients and physicians. Access to the information allows physicians and patients to analyse patient behaviours and develop effective strategies for weight loss.
