Druggists and chemists across India have decided to get their fragmented retail business more organised in order to check the incresing presence of MNCs in the domestic market. They claim to be organised in the wholesale businessbut not so in the retail trade which is highly fragmented.This they intend to change soon. All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) is for this reason initiating a retail chain company which will help check any multinational or big enterprise from entering in the market. In all, 5.5 lakh chemists and druggists who are covered by the organisation have formed a parent company “All Indian-Origin Chemists and Druggists Limited” with Rs 20 crore share capital and will have subsidiaries in 22 states. In all, the association plans to have about Rs 40,000 (10 million US $) crore business in this sector.AIOCD has reportedly already formed “Maharashtra State Chemists and Distributors” in the state and will operate from its 12,000 sq feet office at Chembur in Mumbai.
