Symbiotec Pharmalab Limited on 6 November 2026 announced a 10-year take-or-pay contract development and manufacturing (CDMO) agreement with an unnamed European alternative-protein innovator for fermentation-based alternative protein. The deal, disclosed in a BSE and NSE filing from Indore, reserves dedicated capacity for the partner at Symbiotec’s biomanufacturing campus in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, for the full term.

What the Symbiotec CDMO agreement covers

Production will start at Symbiotec’s existing Ujjain facility, which houses four 100 kilolitre (kL) fermenters, modular downstream processing, and integrated quality assurance and quality control. A new dedicated plant of several hundred thousand litres of fermentation capacity is to follow, with contracted expansion options that can take the programme into the millions of litres, the company said.

Consideration was not disclosed because of confidentiality obligations. Annexure A to the exchange filing classifies the agreement as international, records that the counterparty is not a related party, and identifies the purpose as a strategic CDMO arrangement to manufacture fermentation-based alternative protein for a European innovator.

Why precision fermentation sits in a pharma CDMO model

Precision fermentation uses engineered microorganisms to produce proteins traditionally derived from animals. Symbiotec said those ingredients must meet high quality standards and be made at a cost that supports wider adoption — demands that usually pull against each other. The company argues it can combine pharmaceutical-grade quality systems with a track record of building and running fermentation plants at scale.

That positioning fits a wider Indian CDMO and fermentation build-out visible in recent coverage, from Akums’ CDMO-led Q2 FY27 growth to Zydus Lifesciences’ purchase of Sterling Biotech’s fermentation-based API business and Piramal Pharma’s CDMO-led return to profit.

What Anil Satwani said and how capacity will ramp

Managing Director Anil Satwani said the fermentation-derived protein marks a major milestone in creating cleaner, nutritious alternatives consumers increasingly seek, and that Symbiotec is well positioned for alternative protein, human nutrition and industrial bioproducts as biotechnology changes how everyday essentials are made.

Symbiotec’s H1 FY27 investor presentation, filed with the exchanges before the November announcement, described the European take-or-pay term sheet as then at an advanced signing stage and indicated that initial manufacturing was targeted to commence in Q4. The 6 November filing confirms the agreement is now signed; it does not restate a manufacturing start date.

Who Symbiotec is

Founded in 1995, Symbiotec is an R&D-driven pharmaceutical and biotechnology company with leadership in corticosteroid and steroidal-hormone APIs. It serves more than 200 customers in over 40 countries across APIs, CDMO and complex injectables from four Madhya Pradesh plants approved by USFDA, EU-GMP, WHO-GMP, Japan-PMDA and other regulators. The Ujjain programme sits alongside other Indian biologics CDMO moves such as Enzene’s role in Adalvo’s romiplostim programme.

Key takeaways

  • Symbiotec signed a 10-year take-or-pay CDMO deal on 6 November 2026 for fermentation-based alternative protein with a European innovator.
  • Dedicated Ujjain capacity is reserved for the full term; production starts on four 100 kL fermenters, with a larger dedicated plant and million-litre expansion options to follow.
  • Deal value is confidential; the filing says the transaction is not related-party; MD Anil Satwani framed it as a milestone for cleaner protein production.

FAQ

Where will Symbiotec manufacture the alternative protein?

At its biomanufacturing campus in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, starting at the existing facility and later at a new dedicated fermentation plant for the partner.

Is the European partner named in the filing?

No. The BSE/NSE disclosure identifies the counterparty only as a leading European alternative-protein innovator and withholds commercial terms for confidentiality.

When does manufacturing begin?

The signed 6 November filing does not set a start date. Symbiotec’s earlier H1 FY27 investor presentation had indicated initial manufacturing under the European programme was targeted for Q4.
