Wockhardt has widened access to its novel antibiotic Miqnaf (nafithromycin) in India after the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) removed a supply condition on the drug, the Mumbai-based company said on 2 November 2026 while reporting a 24% rise in second-quarter FY27 consolidated revenue to ₹969 crore.

What the Wockhardt Miqnaf decision changes
With the DCGI condition lifted, Wockhardt said Miqnaf can now reach a wider patient population. The company has put a dedicated field force behind the antibiotic and reported growing clinical acceptance, which it linked to the drug’s pathogen coverage and shorter course of therapy.
Wockhardt also plans to file for an additional indication for Miqnaf in upper respiratory tract infections in the third or fourth quarter of FY27. For a market where antimicrobial resistance poses a strategic challenge for Indian pharma, a home-grown antibiotic with broader access is a notable step.

Wockhardt Q2 FY27 results at a glance
- Consolidated revenue rose 24% year on year to ₹969 crore, from ₹782 crore.
- Profit after tax fell to ₹73 crore from ₹82 crore a year earlier.
- EBITDA was ₹165 crore against ₹160 crore; excluding pre-launch spending on Zaynich, it stood at ₹201 crore.
- Emerging-market revenue grew 52% to ₹310 crore in the quarter.

Biotech and biosimilars drive growth
Wockhardt’s biotechnology operations posted second-quarter revenue of ₹252 crore, up 68% year on year, while first-half biotech revenue rose 87% to ₹487 crore. The company said its emerging-market biotech business grew about 110% in the first half, with partnerships across Brazil, Thailand, Egypt, Algeria and Latin America.
In its international business, Wockhardt reported 24 filings, 18 approvals and 11 launches during the quarter. The biosimilar unit logged two filings and four approvals, adding to a busy period for Indian biosimilar makers such as Biocon, which expanded Yesintek into nine more markets.
Zaynich and the novel antibiotic pipeline
The company highlighted the US Food and Drug Administration’s approval of Zaynich on 29 May 2026 for complicated urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis, calling it the first drug discovered and developed in India to win USFDA approval. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) granted Zaynich manufacturing and marketing approval in India on 25 August 2026, and the European Medicines Agency is reviewing its dossier for several hospital infection indications.
Wockhardt said five of its novel antibiotics, Emrok, Emrok O, Miqnaf, Zaynich and Foviscu, have completed Phase 3 trials. It filed seven patents and received six grants in the quarter. The pipeline builds on years of investment, including the ₹480 crore Wockhardt raised to accelerate antibiotic trials in 2024.
Why it matters for Indian pharma
New antibiotics are among the hardest drugs to bring to market, and few Indian companies have taken novel molecules from discovery to regulated-market approval. Broader access for Miqnaf at home, alongside Zaynich’s global progress, strengthens the case for India as a source of innovative anti-infectives, not just generics, a theme that also features in the 12 Indian innovations backed by a global AMR fund.
