The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has received the Gold Award at the National Awards for e-Governance 2026 for its flagship initiative, ICMR-MINDS, in recognition of the project’s innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies to deliver citizen-centric healthcare services. The award was presented under Category 2 – Innovation by Use of AI and Other New Age Technologies for Providing Citizen-Centric Services, instituted by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG).

To recognise and promote excellence in the implementation of e-Governance initiatives, DARPG presents the National Awards every year. The National Awards for e-Governance (NAeG) are generally conferred during the two-day National Conference on e-Governance. These awards have been presented since 2003. All Central Ministries and Departments, State and UT Governments, districts, local bodies, Central and State Government Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), and academic or research institutions, both government and non-government, are eligible to apply for the awards.
ICMR-MINDS is a national health research priority initiative focused on integrating the screening and management of mental health and substance use disorders with the prevention and treatment of other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The platform leverages AI-enabled digital tools to support early diagnosis, improve clinical decision-making, and strengthen access to mental healthcare services across the country. By integrating mental health into primary healthcare systems, the initiative aims to deliver comprehensive and patient-centric care.
The award was conferred during the 29th National Conference on e-Governance (NCeG) 2026 in Jaipur, recognising outstanding digital governance initiatives that improve public service delivery through innovation and technology. The recognition highlights ICMR’s commitment to harnessing digital technologies to address critical healthcare challenges and improve health outcomes at scale.

Health experts believe that integrating AI into public health programmes can significantly enhance disease surveillance, risk assessment, and personalised care delivery. Through ICMR-MINDS, researchers are generating evidence to support scalable mental healthcare interventions while promoting technology-enabled healthcare models that can be replicated across diverse settings.
The national recognition reinforces ICMR’s growing role in advancing digital health innovation and AI-driven research in India. As the country continues to strengthen its digital healthcare ecosystem, initiatives such as ICMR-MINDS demonstrate how emerging technologies can transform public health delivery, expand access to quality care, and support evidence-based policymaking for improved healthcare outcomes.
