Despite significant strides in India’s healthcare landscape, equitable access to quality eye care remains a major challenge—particularly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. With millions still affected by preventable blindness, there is an urgent need for scalable, patient-centric solutions. In this exclusive conversation, Dr. Samir Sud, Co-founder & Director of Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals, speaks with Dr. Asawari Savant from Elets News Network (ENN) about how Sharp Sight is transforming ophthalmology through clinical excellence, HealthTech integration, and community-driven outreach.
From a business leadership perspective, how has Sharp Sight balanced clinical excellence with sustainable growth across its network of eye hospitals in India?
At Sharp Sight, we firmly believe that clinical excellence is the cornerstone of high-quality healthcare and sustainable growth. A healthcare brand cannot grow without ensuring the highest quality of treatment and patient care. We have consistently maintained high standards across our hospitals, which naturally contributes to 5–7% annual growth. Our regular Eye Awareness Talks and Eye Check-Up Camps set us apart in various communities. These initiatives not only raise awareness about the importance of eye care but also encourage people to seek timely treatment, thereby helping us expand our footprint. With a clear focus on community service, adapting to digital trends, and implementing smart expansion strategies, Sharp Sight is not only delivering better eye health today but also building a strong foundation for tomorrow.
What role do strategic partnerships—such as with technology providers, pharmaceutical companies, or government programs—play in scaling Sharp Sight’s services and outreach?
Strategic partnerships are a key pillar in Sharp Sight’s journey toward expanding its services and reaching underserved populations. These collaborations enable us to deliver quality eye care efficiently and help those in need access essential treatments. One of our most impactful alliances has been with the Government of India through the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which allows us to provide advanced eye treatments, such as cataract surgeries, to economically weaker sections of society. This public health initiative ensures that cost is not a barrier to essential eye care.
With the Indian healthcare sector embracing digital transformation, how is Sharp Sight leveraging HealthTech innovations to streamline operations and enhance patient experiences?
We are actively adopting HealthTech innovations to enhance both diagnostics and patient care. For instance, during outreach programs in remote areas, we use AI-powered mobile tools to accurately detect cataracts. This technology enables our teams to identify cases quickly and refer patients for timely surgery. Similarly, we use AI algorithms to screen for retinopathy—a condition that can lead to blindness if untreated. These innovations enable us to deliver faster, more accurate care, especially in areas where expert doctors may not always be available, thus making the treatment process more efficient and accessible.
How do you approach talent acquisition and clinical training to ensure uniform quality and patient outcomes across multiple locations, especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities?
To ensure consistent quality of care across our hospitals, we follow a centralised recruitment and training model. Our Human Resources team actively recruits talented doctors and healthcare professionals from India’s top eye care institutes. These professionals undergo rigorous training in OPD (Outpatient Department) and IPD (Inpatient Department) protocols, patient communication, and surgical procedures. Only once they meet our high standards are they deployed to other locations. This process guarantees that patients receive the same level of care, whether in a metropolitan area or a rural town.
What key metrics does Sharp Sight track to measure success in terms of both clinical outcomes and business performance?
At Sharp Sight, we adopt a balanced approach to measure success, giving equal importance to clinical excellence and business growth. Clinically, we monitor visual outcomes post-surgery—specifically on Day 1, Day 15, and Day 30—to evaluate the improvement in a patient’s vision and ensure consistently high surgical standards.
From a business standpoint, we track both month-on-month and year-on-year growth using key performance indicators such as total patient footfall, revenue generation, number of surgeries performed, and outreach success rates. This data-driven approach helps us make informed decisions that enhance patient satisfaction, drive innovation, and scale services across India.
How do you foresee AI and data analytics reshaping eye care delivery models, and how is Sharp Sight preparing for this shift at the organisational level?
AI and data analytics are already revolutionising eye care by enabling early detection, faster diagnosis, and more accurate screening—all of which are critical for preventing serious eye conditions. At Sharp Sight, we are preparing for this shift by integrating AI tools into our diagnostic systems and training our staff to use them effectively. We are also developing internal data analysis systems to study patient outcomes, plan targeted outreach programs, and optimise hospital operations. This proactive approach allows us to enhance service delivery and patient care.
As a healthcare entrepreneur, what advice would you offer to emerging players looking to build scalable, patient-centric healthcare ventures in India’s competitive ophthalmology landscape?
India continues to face challenges in providing quality eye care, especially in rural and underserved regions. My advice to aspiring healthcare entrepreneurs is to focus on bridging the gap between advanced medical services and underdeveloped areas. Don’t just aim for profits—serve society and make a meaningful impact by ensuring access to high-quality eye care. If you offer the right treatment, build a strong team, and keep patient care at the heart of your mission, your venture will naturally grow and thrive. When the country progresses, its people flourish.

What strategic plans are in place for Sharp Sight to expand its footprint, both within India and internationally?
Our immediate focus is on deepening our presence within India rather than expanding internationally. We are working on establishing multiple cataract and vision centres around our existing secondary hospitals. These smaller eye care centres are designed to deliver basic services at the community level and serve as feeder units for larger hospitals when advanced treatment is required. Given the significant unmet need for quality eye care in India, our priority is to serve more communities across the nation before considering global expansion.
